Introduction to Pension Credit

Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit for people who have reached State Pension age. In the UK, the State Pension age is currently 66 and is scheduled to rise to 67 between 2026 and 2028.

Pension Credit is designed to provide extra financial support if your income in retirement is low. It has two parts:

  • Guarantee Credit, which tops up weekly income to a minimum level
  • Savings Credit, an additional payment only available to people who reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016

Guarantee Credit is the most common element and may be available even if you have some savings or other retirement income.

What Pension Credit Can Help With

Pension Credit can provide extra income for day-to-day living costs and may also help you access additional support.

Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify for extra amounts if you:

  • Have caring responsibilities
  • Have a severe disability
  • Have certain housing costs

Because Pension Credit is means-tested, entitlement depends on your income, household situation and savings.

Who Can Claim Pension Credit?

To claim Pension Credit, you must:

  • Have reached State Pension age
  • Live in the UK
  • Meet the income and capital rules

If you live with a partner, you usually need to apply as a couple, and your joint income and savings will be assessed.

Not all income is treated the same way. Some benefits or payments may be partly ignored, so it is worth checking the rules carefully or using an official calculator.

How Savings Affect Pension Credit

There is no fixed upper limit on savings, but savings can affect how much you receive.

If you have more than £10,000 in capital1, HMRC applies a system called the tariff income system. This means savings above £10,000 are treated as producing income for assessment purposes.

The current rule is:

  • £1 per week of assumed income for every £500 (or part of £500) above £10,000

This may reduce the amount of Pension Credit you are entitled to, but it does not automatically disqualify you.

Guarantee Credit vs Savings Credit

Guarantee Credit

Guarantee Credit tops up your weekly income to at least the minimum level set each tax year. It is intended for people whose retirement income is below that standard.

Savings Credit

Savings Credit is only available if you reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016 and have some additional retirement provision.

Most new claimants today will not qualify for Savings Credit, but it remains relevant for some older households.

How Much Could You Receive?

The amount of Pension Credit you may get depends on:

  • Your income (including pensions and earnings)
  • Your savings and investments
  • Whether you live alone or with a partner
  • Whether you qualify for extra amounts (for example, disability or caring additions)

For the most accurate estimate, use the official Pension Credit calculator on GOV.UK2 or speak to an independent support organisation.

How to Claim Pension Credit

Claiming Pension Credit is usually straightforward. You can apply:

  • Online via GOV.UK
  • By phone using the Pension Credit claim line
  • By post (forms can be requested)

You will typically need:

  • Your National Insurance number
  • Bank account details
  • Information about income, savings and pensions
  • Housing cost details (if relevant)

You can claim up to four months before reaching State Pension age, and claims can usually be backdated by up to three months if you were eligible during that period.

Applying early can help avoid delays.

Keeping Your Claim Up to Date

Once you are receiving Pension Credit, it is important to report changes that could affect your entitlement, such as:

  • Changes in income or pension payments
  • Changes in savings
  • Moving home
  • Changes in household circumstances

This helps prevent overpayments or missed support.

Additional Support Linked to Pension Credit

Claiming Pension Credit can sometimes unlock access to other help, including:

  • Housing Benefit (where applicable)
  • Council Tax Reduction
  • Help with NHS health costs, such as dental treatment or glasses
  • A free TV licence if you are aged 75+ and receive Pension Credit

Eligibility for linked benefits depends on your circumstances and local authority rules.

A Financial Adviser Can Help

While Pension Credit itself is a state benefit, retirement finances can involve wider considerations such as pensions, savings and long-term planning.

An FCA-authorised financial adviser may be able to help you understand how different sources of retirement income fit together and support broader financial decisions.

FinancialAdvisers.co.uk can connect you with an FCA-authorised and regulated financial adviser in your area for tailored retirement planning guidance.
